What is Pétanque?
Pétanque is a French outdoor game where players throw metal balls, called boules, at a smaller wooden ball, called a cochonnet or jack, to score points. The goal is to be the first player or team to reach 13 points.
Here are some things to know about pétanque:
How to play
Players stand in a circle and take turns throwing or rolling their boules as close as possible to the jack. Players can also try to hit their opponents’ boules away from the jack.
Where to play
Pétanque is usually played on hard dirt or gravel, but can also be played on grass or sand. It can be played in public areas like parks or in dedicated facilities called boulodromes.
History
The game originated in La Ciotat, Provence, in southern France in 1907.
