The Epping Ongar Railway boasts a rich history, dating back to 1865. Over time, it evolved into the eastern end of the Central Line, serving commuters for decades before the branch finally closed to regular services in 1994. Thankfully, the line was saved by a dedicated group of volunteers who spent years restoring the route, allowing it to officially reopen in 2012 as a popular heritage railway.
Today, the railway stands as a premier visitor attraction where guests can experience the nostalgia of vintage steam train travel through the Essex countryside. A highlight of the experience is the convenient connection via heritage buses from Epping Underground Station, Ongar, and Shenfield. Operated by over 250 volunteers, the attraction features beautifully restored stations and a diverse calendar of events that showcase the line's enduring charm.
Elevating the experience further is our unique "Restaurant on Rails." We have repositioned the railway as a destination for food lovers, offering a variety of dining events that turn a scenic journey into a culinary occasion. From our signature "Epping Fryer" fish and chips and luxurious "Cream Tea" afternoons to themed evening services like "The Italian Job" we offer a range of flavors served right on the train.
